Pottery Town Craft Cluster (Ethnographic research)

As we walk through the street of the pottery town in Benson Town, which is located on the other side of the bustling metropolis. This is where we begin the craft cluster research, focusing on the product analysis from a branding perspective. The community settles in their indigenous culture and livelihood. Enough to sustain the mainstream of economic and upbringing activities like education, lifestyles etc. The major charms of this community is that it attracts everyone and has something to offer for everyone, be it journalists, students, business, tourists, homemakers and so forth.

The artisans have substantially assisted in the entire process of this study and craft documentation, providing insightful knowledge in every of our contextual enquiries with their personal experiences. Demonstrating each method, technique, and engaging in a thorough discussion of its people, history, and culture to how these factors influence their work, the major problems they face in the pottery production and how in the past recent years of COVID has impacted differently in each of them. This learning and experience encouraged us to appreciate the craft better and effort that went through in each making.

Located in the heart of Benson town, about 3 km away from Bangalore Cantonment to Bangalore East, Pottery town evokes a rustic charm, with small houses lining both sides of all the four narrow by lanes, potter's wheels spinning clay pots and vases, and earthenware left out to dry in the scorching sun. With its winding lanes lined with quaint little houses and earthenware drying outside, Pottery Town preserves a piece of the history of the city. The settlement, which is over a century old and was founded by the British, would be bustling with activity if melamine, steel, and ceramic ware were still in use.
